Glass Loggia House

Additions & Alterations

This architectural project was a collaboration with Allen Jack & Cottier. The house, a High Victorian mansion, reveals influences reminiscent of architect Ferdinand Reuss’s work, blending intricate historical details with a sense of grandeur. At the entrance, a striking feature – a bronzed bough from the Bull Bay tree – is pinned to the wall like a brooch, symbolizing a connection to nature and setting the tone for the home’s unique character.

The design emphasizes the play of light and shadow, with sunlight flooding the hall from within and spilling through the open door to pierce the garden’s shadows. The project speaks to themes of thresholds: the shifting between spatial volumes, states of consciousness, and the fluid boundaries between inside and outside, as well as the contrast between old and new.

When the renovation team was brought together, the house was suffering from a run-down garden and darkened spaces due to poorly executed additions. The team’s work not only revitalized the home but also brought a thoughtful balance between the past and present, enhancing both the architectural integrity and the overall experience of the space.
